Water Damage - Water Extraction Case Study |
Background
At a home in Gloucester Massachusetts we were thankful the customer called the morning he discovered the
water in his basement. He had had 2 prior floods and was educated in he risks of watching and waiting.
There was 1200 sf in the basement and about a third of it was wet including a carpet that had no pad
(it was just glued to the concrete) The walls were sheetrock with wood trim.
| |
Strategy
Since we arrived within hours of the damage occurring, we felt that we could get the carpet and the walls
dry without having to cut any sheetrock. The client wanted to cut sheetrock since he had had problems in
the past. While this is often good thinking since we had the right tools and the right timeframe to do the
restoration with as little possible damage to the home.
| |
Techniques Used
We extracted the water, cleaned the carpet, and set up a half dozen large blower fans and an industrial dehumidifier.
The fans were rotated every 12 hours and within two days we felt the water would be gone in two more days.
We then remove the equipment at day four.
| |
Results
We tested the walls and carpet with a humidity sensing device and found that the water was completely gone
in the sheetrock, wood and carpet. The client was amazed that he did not have to destroy the sheetrock for
a third time and the house was restored to normal. It pays to act fast and aggressively at the early stages
before mold has a chance to grow.
